Governor Abbott praises Austin's tech industry

Gov. Abbott hosts SXSW tech meetup

AUSTIN - Saturday night, some of the top technology minds from across the nation and around the world gathered at the Governor's Mansion to talk about the tech industry and what it looks like in Austin right now.

Governor Greg Abbott hosted a South By Southwest technology reception Saturday, talking about the continual increase of tech companies in Austin and why so many businesses are moving their headquarters to Texas. He said one of the main reasons for all this success is startups.

"You happen to be at ground zero for the future of innovation and especially where it intersects with technology," Abbott said. "If you have a vision, if you have a dream, if you have a work ethic to achieve that dream, there is no better place for you to be than in the Lone Star state right now."

Abbott brought up the diversity of the workforce as a reason so many technology companies continue to come to Austin and Texas today. Abbott also said new projects from entrepreneurs have a higher chance of succeeding in Austin compared to other cities across the country. That ability to start early and build something is something governor Abbott said is at the core of what it means to be a Texan.

"If you're somebody who has your own sense of independence, if you have a longing to be able to chart your own future, as opposed to having somebody else dictate that future, that is the brand of independence that stimulates technology development, but it's also the brand of independence that stimulates the Texas economy," Abbott said.

One of the companies Abbott talked about is IBM. Some of the designers from the IBM in Austin showed off a virtual reality device that allows you to sketch an image with pen and paper and then use a 360-degree camera to see what you drew in virtual reality.

Russell Parrish is a designer for IBM and used to work in New York before moving to Austin. He said he loves the tech culture that continues to grow in Austin.
