Have you ever taken a trip to the coast – Texas or otherwise – and sat on the beach for a few hours, enjoying the waves crashing along the shore, breathing in the salt air and soaking up the sun and notice how at peace you were? Maybe it's the feeling of escaping the city and the worries back at home, or perhaps it's the sound of the sea putting your mind at ease.
Have you ever stopped to wonder if the feeling you have is directly related to the salty ocean air?
Mother-daughter duo, Trish Arnold and Sabrina Gibson discovered the power of salt therapy when Gibson's son required treatment for allergies and eczema. At the time, Gibson and her son were living in Colorado and visiting a salt therapy center weekly. At the same time, Arnold was suffering from asthma in the state of Georgia – needing to use an inhaler almost four to five times a day.
The two quickly found relief in salt therapy treatment and partnered together to open Breathe It In Salt Rooms in North Austin – the city's first salt therapy center.
Salt therapy is a 100 percent natural alternative for people of all ages suffering from a variety of respiratory and skin conditions. Salt acts like an expectorant, accelerating mucus clearance and improving lung function while simultaneously killing harmful bacteria and soothing the respiratory system. Also, as an anti-inflammatory, salt therapy calms the irritated lining of nasal sinuses and lungs from the bronchi to alveoli – reducing tissue irritation, swelling and opening the airways for immediate improved breathing.
Breathe It In has been well received among Austinites – especially those who prefer a holistic approach to treatment. The nearest salt therapy rooms in Texas are located in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex or Houston with only 21 of 50 states in the country currently offer such treatments in a spa-like setting.
"A woman in the Austin-area contacted us immediately and was so excited we were opening," said Gibson. "She's suffering from cystic fibrosis and had been driving two hours to a salt therapy room in Houston every month just for relief until she receives a lung transplant."
Packages for adults, children and even family therapy sessions are available at Breathe It In, where two rooms are floor-to-ceiling rock salt with pharmaceutical grade, 99.9 percent USP sodium chloride pumped into the air. Arnold and Gibson applied the sodium chloride by hand, using a special sodium epoxy and throwing the salt on the walls and ceiling in preparation of their store opening.
One salt therapy room is kid-oriented with a fun slide, TV for cartoons and a table and chairs for coloring or reading – this room contains 31/2 tons of salt, while the larger salt therapy room is tailored for adults; including lounge chairs, ambient lighting and soothing, spa sounds for optimal relaxation. The larger room contains four and a half tons of salt measuring 1-2 inches deep on all walls and ceiling and 3-4 inches deep on the floor.
Homemade salt scrubs, authentic Himalayan crystal salt lamps – which naturally equalize ions in the air – and natural salt inhalers are available for purchase. Breathe It In is offering $20 off your introductory salt therapy session when you call and schedule an appointment.
