AUSTIN -- Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are out in full force through the Labor Day holiday weekend to crack down on drunk driving.

DWI patrols were increased on Aug. 19, and will be out on Texas roads  through Sept. 5. Troopers are stationed in high-risk areas where there are more alcohol-related accidents.

“Drinking and driving is always a concern during holidays and getting intoxicated drivers off our roads saves lives," DPS Director Steven McCraw said.

Authorities are urging drivers to use the following safety tips:

  • Don’t drink and drive. Designate a driver or take a cab.
  • Eliminate distractions and don’t text while driving.
  • Buckle up everyone in the vehicle.
  • Slow down, especially in bad weather, construction areas and heavy traffic.
  • Slow down or move over for tow trucks and police, and fire and EMS vehicles stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated.
  • Don’t drive while tired.
  • Drive defensively, as holiday travel may present additional challenges.
  • Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained before your trip begins.

DPS officials made more than 2,000 Driving While Intoxicated arrests during the Labor Day holiday weekend last year.
