Peggy Spring, COSA Natural Areas education coordinator says: Mexican Hats are one of our favorite Texas wildflowers. The ‘petals’ are actually modified leaves surrounding hundreds of tiny flowers in the center. Ladies who grew up in this area often talk about taking the ‘petals’ and sticking to the ends of their fingers for fake fingernails.
