The walkway over the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie is the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. It is 1.28 miles long and 212 feet tall and was originally a railroad bridge. It was first used in 1889 and was considered a technological wonder. A fire in 1974 caused severe damage to the structure and rail traffic was halted. Fundraising to convert the bridge for pedestrian use began in 1992. The bridge was open to the public in October of 2009.
