AUSTIN -- If you're hitting the road for Independence Day, you'll be joining nearly three million other Texans.

AAA is predicting 2.98 million people in Texas will travel more than 50 miles from home for the 4th of July. That number is up five percent from last year.

AAA predicts the busiest day, with 25 percent of drivers on the roads, will be Friday, June 29.

“The increase in travel on this 4th of July is a result of Texans’ desire for travel, a mid-week holiday where many travelers may choose to extend their vacation and lower gas prices,” said AAA Texas Vice President of Branch Operations Rhonda Wilson. “This is the second holiday this year where travelers indicated a determination to travel while economizing by actively seeking value-added travel options and activities.”

The travel period for the holiday is considered Tuesday, July 3 through Sunday, July 8.

AAA says of those 2.98 million Texans traveling, the majority will be by car or truck.
