AUSTIN -- A new music venue opens in the Austin area Friday night, boosting Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World.
The Austin360 Amphitheater will host country music star Kenny Chesney in its debut.
The amphitheater sits at the base of the observation tower at Circuit of the Americas. It's the largest permanent stage in Central Texas. It can accommodate 14,000 fans with seats for 6,700, and a large grassy field for others.
Chesney’s concert is just the start of the inaugural season. President of TAG Presents Paul Thornton says 16 shows have been scheduled for later this year, including concerts with Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews Band, Zac Brown Band and Mumford and Sons.
"Everyone is just super excited about a new venue. You know, you haven't had a new amphitheater open in North America in years, if not over a decade I think, so the industry is excited in watching this too," said Thornton.
Thornton expects to book 20 shows in the theater’s first year.
