Phelps vs. Shark: Decorated Olympian to race ocean predator during Shark Week

One of humanity's greatest swimmers is set to race one of the ocean's greatest swimmers - that's right, it's Michael Phelps versus Shark.

The Discovery Channel announced Friday that Michael Phelps will race a shark during the network's popular Shark Week.

"They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds. But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before," the network said in a press release. "The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on!"

The programming schedule for Shark Week lists the race as 'Great Gold vs. Great White,' indicated that Phelps will race a great white shark.

According to National Geographic, great whites typically weigh at least 5,000 pounds and grow to somewhere between 15 feet and 20 feet in length. They can swim at speeds up to 15 miles per hour.

The race is scheduled for Sunday, July 23 at 8 p.m.
