NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Public tours of Naval Station Norfolk have been cancelled due to the federal government shutdown.

Naval Station Norfolk is the world's largest naval base and the Navy typically offers to takes visitors on base several times a day to show them ships, aircraft and other parts of the base.

While most of the military has been spared from the effects of the shutdown, the Defense Department can only conduct activities that specifically support military personnel. The Navy says public tours of the base do not fall under that category.
