I wonder: How are nail polishes named?

Spring has sprung, which means sandal season is upon us. Women will be donning their toes with fresh coats of lacquer in preparation for bearing their feet to the world.

If you paint your nails, you have undoubtedly noticed that each color you choose has its own unique name. So, where did each name come from?

I turned to OPI, “the world leader in professional nail care” and the company behind thousands of nail polish color names, for more information.

OPI told me that when tasked with naming a polish color, six people from different departments have a lengthy, secret meeting. According to the company, the group will bring food to the meeting, as well as other inspirations related to the polish collection’s destination or theme.

“Hundreds of names might be considered during the process,” a spokesperson for OPI said. “This year alone, OPI will create over 150 lacquer names.”

Meetings usually last six to eight hours, and then votes for the top names are cast.

OPI recently went through the naming process for the Texas Collection of polishes launched for this spring and summer. One of the 12 polishes in the collection gives a nod to our fair city – "Austin-tatious Turquoise."

Some of the other clever names hailing from the Texas Collection include:
"San Tan-tonio," "Big Hair...Big Nails," "Houston We Have a Purple," and "Do You Think I'm Tex-y?"

So as you paint your nails this spring, remember to think of the hours it took to someone to come up with its name!

You can find the OPI Texas Collection at professional salons around Austin, as well as Beauty Brands, Beauty First, Chatters, Dillard’s, JCPenney, Pure Beauty, Regis, Trade Secret, and Ulta, for $8.50.
