What is a breakfast taco, and where can you find one?
That could seem like a useless question to some, but, while it may be hard to believe, there are people in the Lone Star State who do not know what a breakfast taco is (gasp)! I used to be one of them, though I usually try to keep that embarrassing fact hidden.
So transplant Texans, this post is for you.
A breakfast taco is a food invention that has a debated origin, but, regardless of where they came from, I am glad they are here to stay! The hungry soul who decided to combine eggs, meat, cheese, potatoes and other random edibles, and wrap them in a warm tortilla was a genius, in my opinion.
Central Texans are lucky to have access to this tasty invention on many a corner. Taco-serving diners, restaurants, and yes, even gas stations abound. However, finding one that is worth your dollars and taste buds is another story.
Rob Balon, Austin food critic and host of KVUE’s “Dining Out with Rob Balon,” recommends several local eateries’ breakfast tacos:
Austin Java -- Breakfast tacos range from $1.99 to $2.69.
Curras -- Breakfast tacos start at $1.50 with 35 cents for each additional ingredient after two choices. After 2 p.m. tacos are $2.00.
Joe’s Bakery -- Breakfast tacos start at $1.59 with additional ingredients costing an extra 20 to 40 cents each.
Juan in a Million -- Breakfast tacos range from $1.95 to $2.70.
Royito’s -- All breakfast tacos are $2.00 and served with their “We Don’t Do Mild” hot sauce.
Torchy’s Tacos -- All breakfast tacos are $2.00.
“They are each unique in their own way and yet have uncommonly great flavors and textures,” Balon said.

For those living north of Austin, you might consider breakfast tacos at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, which has a new Cedar Park location.
