I wonder: How does Mark Murray’s KVUE/IBC Bank Weather Snapshot Contest work?

Every night KVUE Chief Meteorologist Mark Murry features a photo as part of the KVUE/IBC Bank Weather Snapshot Contest. As a former KVUE viewer-turned-employee who has had a photo featured in one of Mark’s weathercasts, I got to wondering how he picks such unique photos.

As it turns out, the competition among photos is fairly tough, considering Mark sifts through 100 to 200 submissions each month. He only has room to feature 20 to 24 weather snapshots during a typical month.

Mark says he tries to look at each snapshot viewers send in.

“I’m looking for images that really highlight why so many of us choose to live in Central Texas,” Murray said. “I also look for a good story behind the snapshot. Sometimes the pictures speak for themselves, but a good story makes it even better!”

For the prize-winning photo picked at the end of each month’s contest, Mark said he has a rotating panel of judges. Each judge picks their top three snapshots from the month. Each first place vote gets three points, a second place vote gets two points, and a third place vote earns one point. The snapshot with the most points wins the prize for the month. That prize is a $100 IBC Bank cash card.

Now, in its 10th year, it is safe to say the snapshot contest is a success. Murray estimates he has shown over 2,500 photos over the last 10 years.

“Now wherever I go, people often stop me to let me know that I showed one of their photos,” Murray said. “It’s really great whenever there’s severe or interesting weather in the area. My e-mail box is stuffed with cool pictures to show everyone at home!”
