This Father’s Day, dads everywhere will be out spending quality time with family, visiting parks, playing games and enjoying life and what it has to offer. Then there are some dads that would rather stay inside, planted on the couch. And that’s okay. Family bonding can happen in front of the television as well. As a matter of fact, most of us can recall dad’s belly laugh at a comedy or a gasp during a police drama.
Here’s our editor’s list of the top five best television series to watch with dad, all available on DVD or online streaming:
#5 – Adam 12 -- Two cops riding the smoggy streets of 1970’s Los Angeles. "Adam 12" is a good old cop drama with unpredictable (but believable) action, social commentary about the “hippies” and “the fuzz,” and the message that crime really doesn’t pay. Available on DVD, Netflix streaming and Amazon Instant Video.
#4 – M*A*S*H -- The 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital was the ultimate buddy TV series of the 1970s. The rebellious doctors of the 4077th were icons for anti-establishment and their irreverent efforts to survive the horrors of war are still relevant today. Available on DVD, and Amazon Instant Video.
#3 – Star Trek: The Original Series -- Remastered from original prints and enhanced with modern special effects, the adventures of Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise are as fun to watch as they were 1960s. Action-packed episodes with danger and thrills are the hallmark of the series, a hit with dads everywhere. Available on DVD, Netflix streaming and Amazon Instant Video
#2 – Dragnet -- Dads everywhere will smile when they hear “THIS is the city…” and kids will love the detective work of Bill Gannon and Sgt. Joe Friday as they solve a dizzying range of crime in Los Angeles. Less-than passionate acting and incredibly long morality speeches by Friday make this a retro-camp must see on Father’s Day. Available on DVD, Netflix streaming and Amazon Instant Video.
And the #1 choice for celebrating Father’s Day around the TV is…
#1 The Andy Griffith Show -- Face it, we all want to spend the weekend in Mayberry. Andy and Opie Taylor formed the perfect father and son couple, with occasional misunderstandings that always ended in a long talk and a hug. We all want to take the long walk down to the fishin hole and whistle the opening theme. It’s a happy way to spend part of Father’s Day with dad. Available on DVD, Netflix streaming and Amazon Instant Video.
