AGE SAFE Week
Historic AGE Building (3710 Cedar Street, Austin, Texas)
http://www.ageofaustin.org

Did you know that 1 in 3 seniors will fall this year alone? The injuries resulting from that fall can cause be devastating to their health, causing loss of independence, early nursing home placement or even death. Many of these falls are totally preventable if seniors can safety proof their homes and get access to durable medical equipment. June 3-10, AGE is kicking off a donation drive for durable medical equipment, like wheel chairs, shower chairs, canes and walkers. Our FREE Durable Medical Equipment lending service at AGE has over 70 seniors on the waiting list for these critical, life-enhancing items. Most highly requested equipment is not covered by insurance or public benefits, and is a financial burden for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Since the service is run entirely on donations, we need YOUR help to keep Central Texas seniors safe and independent in their homes! Bring donation of cash or equipment to the Historic AGE Building (3710 Cedar Street, Austin, Texas) from June 3-10! Contact Nicole Daspit at ndaspit@ageofaustin.org or 451-4611 for more information!

PKWproductions'
Alamo Drafthouse at Lake Creek

AUSTIN, Texas – PKWproductions will keep its audience on the edge of their seat as Lake Creek Alamo Drafthouse brings back its popular Music and a Movie serie following an 8-month hiatus with a screening of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic Psycho with live concerts by PKWproductions on Sunday, July 5 at 8 p.m. As the first “Music and a Movie” in this calendar year, PKWproductions director P. Kellach Waddle will victimize his audience as his ensemble performs arrangements of works from famed movie score composer Bernard Hermann as well as Waddle’s original compositions inspired by the music of insane composers to coincide with the screening. Hermann’s infamous screaming violins throb throughout the film creates a sense of suspense and dread the film has become known for. Waddle will present his own interpretation of Hermann’s "black and white" music that will make even the most devout thriller film seekers’ hair rise. Fresh from his appearance at the International Society of Bassists convention where, following his performance convention officials dubbed him "one of the great bassists of the world," Waddle will bridge the gap between the classic and new in the pre-movie concert by performing two of his own works based on themes of Schumann and Tchiakovsky. And for the first time in PKWproductions “Music and A Movie” history, there will be vocals—songs of Robert Schumann will feature soprano Emily Breedlove and pianist Brett Bachus. The intermission concert will be centered around the blood-curdling works of Psycho’s movie score composer Bernard Hermann. Waddle’s disquieting tones will be accompanied by pianist and Bachus Conservatory founder Brett Bachus and renowned guitarist Aaryn Russell (Bee Vs. Moth, et al) for music from Hermann's scores to Vertigo and Psycho.

Opening Reception: Thursday 23 July 6-8pm Summer Gallery Hours (July & August): Tues-Sat 12-5pm Regular Gallery Hours: Tues-Sat 11-6pm d berman gallery is pleased to present new work by Jana Swec and Jared Theis, two central Texas artists whose use of expressive line quality and personal themes resonate in their quietly seductive work. East Austin Studio Tour co-founder and member of the Sodalitas art collaborative, Jana Swec finds inspiration in nature. The lines of her pen and ink drawings undulate across the paper, creating intricate, abstracted forms of merging trees, root structures, and elephants' trunks and legs. Jared Theis combines his mastery of finely detailed ceramics and his passion for music to create the body of work //Measures//. These slabs of clay are delicately etched, resulting in relief-like qualities that rhythmically push and pull into the surfaces. Please join us Thursday July 25 from 6-8 pm for the opening reception and again Saturday August 8th at 1pm for an informal musical performance by the artists.

Frida Kahlo's Self-portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird
Harry Ransom Center
http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/exhibitions/

The Ransom Center celebrates the homecoming of one of its most famous and frequently borrowed art works, the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's Self-portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird (1940). Since 1990 the painting has been on almost continuous loan, featured in exhibitions at 28 museums in the U. S. and around the world, including Australia, Canada, France, and Spain. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) taught herself how to paint after she was severely injured in a bus accident at the age of 18. For Kahlo, painting became an act of cathartic ritual and her symbolic images portray a cycle of pain, death, and rebirth. Kahlo's affair in New York City with her friend, the photographer Nickolas Muray (American, b. Hungary, 1892-1965), and subsequent divorce from the artist Diego Rivera left her heartbroken and lonely, but she produced some of her most powerful and compelling self-portraits during this time period. Muray purchased the Center's self-portrait from Kahlo to help her during a difficult financial period. It is part of the Nickolas Muray collection of more than 100 works of art, which was acquired by the Center in 1966.
