The 45th Zilker Holiday Tree Lighting, a much loved Austin tradition, continued despite the dreary conditions.
City workers spent the better part of Sunday preparing for the crowds. The weekend's rain had already limited accessibility to the park. Officials closed off parking at Zilker Park's Polo Field to keep cars off the soaked ground.
Organizers expected weather to bring a dip in visitors, but said not to underestimate the fans of the Zilker Tree.
"People here are die-hards, and they believe in tradition," said Jason Maurer from Austin Parks and Recreation. "The lighting of the tree on the first Sunday of December is very important, and we think we will still have a good turn out."
Due to the limited parking, organizers suggested car pooling or taking the bus.
The only thing that would derail the plan was lightning, but the tree would be lit Sunday night come rain or shine.
