AUSTIN -- Austin’s self-proclaimed “Home of the Blues” closed a chapter Monday night only to open another.
The iconic Blues club Antones is moving shop from 5th and Lavaca Street, after being at its present location for almost 16 years.
The club is opening up in what used to the Beauty Bar on East Riverside, making it the fifth move in the nearly 40 years of the club’s history.
Monday night featured a who’s who of Austin musicians like Marcia Ball, Malford Milligan, Jimmie Vaughan and Carolyn Wonderland, just to name a few.
“Antones is our home. Antones is where I decided I wanted to become a musician. So I really owe my entire career to this brand, this club, this spirit, the whole deal,” said Kathy Valentine, a former member of the 80s band the Go Gos and current member of The Bluebonnets.
“A lot of people really loved the Guadalupe location and I did too. And of course I remember the original. That was of course the heart and soul of what Antones is. But this one, I like the shape of this room,” said musician Marcia Ball.
Antones is due to open up in its East Riverside location in a week and a half.
Sources say a California company will open up an underground dance club at the 5th Street and Lavaca location.
