We’ve heard a lot about lead and cadmium in jewelry, but now it’s showing up in drinking glasses.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and McDonald’s announced this morning it is recalling 12 million “Shrek Forever After 3D” collectable drinking glasses because the designs contain cadmium. Long term exposure to cadmium can cause serious health effects.

Cadmium is a known carcinogen that research shows also can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems.

The “Shrek Forever After 3D” collectable drinking glass are 16 ounce glasses that came in four designs, Shrek, Fiona, Puss n’ Boots, and Donkey. They were sold at McDonald’s restaurants nationwide from May 2010 into June 2010 for about $2.

If you bought these stop using them immediately. McDonald’s plans to offer a full refund but hasn’t given that information out just yet.

It has set up this web site where it plans to post the information. If you have questions call (800) 244-6227 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday.
