This is a great day to find a unique gift for someone special and support a local business. First Thursday on South Congress is a day when many of the shops on South Congress stay open until 10pm and offer sales. The restaurants often get in on the deals as well.

Want to save even more? Take advantage of the Go Local Austin cards. These cards will get you discounts throughout the year at hundreds of locally owned Austin businesses. Each card costs $10 but lasts usually a year. Be sure to check the expiration date on the card you’re buying. The card really does pay for itself in no time at all. You can buy these cards on line or at any of these businesses.

Many of you may not realize how much it means to support those locally owned businesses. According to the 3/50 Project, when you shop locally-owned independent businesses “68 percent of your purchase is recycled back into the local economy through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. With national chains 43 percent of your purchase stays home. If you buy something on line, 0 percent of your purchase stays in the local economy.”

The Austin Independent Business Association also has a list of many of the locally owned businesses you can find across the city.
