You’ll soon be able to use your cell phone to save even more money.

Target announced that starting Wednesday it will allow customers to take advantage of special mobile-coupon offers on their handsets.

According to USA Today, “The coupon is redeemed when the bar code on the phone is scanned at checkout. Offers are good only once and expire on the dates listed. ‘We believe it's a competitive advantage for us,’ says Target.com President Steve Eastman.

Shoppers interested in Target's program must "opt in" by registering at the company's online or mobile websites, or by texting the word "COUPONS" to 827438. Opting in addresses privacy concerns, Target says. Once registered, shoppers receive a text message on their phones with a link to a mobile Web page with various offers, which can all be accessed through a single bar code. Target says the program works with any phone that has a browser and data plan.

New coupons will be issued on a monthly basis as older ones expire, although the number and frequency may evolve as the program expands. The coupons cannot be used on Target.com."

I have heard complaints from some shoppers who say certain stores won’t accept coupons from your phone, but I thought I'd share some sites/apps in case you're interesting in saving while you're on the go. It's worth a shot at trying them.

  • Cellfire is a mobile service I've written about before on my blog. This site sends coupons to your phone. And the company has partnered up with Randall’s and Safeway to help you maximize your savings. It doesn’t cost anything unless you opt in to receive occasional text message updates. In that case standard text message charges do apply.
  • Coupon Sherpa is another app I've written about here before. For those of you without an iPhone check out the web site for the latest coupons. The great thing about this site is that it lets you search by store or category.
  • The Find is another app I’ve been hearing a lot about. This one not only shows you the latest coupons for some of your favorite stores, it can look to see where you will get the best price.
  • I love the name of this next site. It's called Yowza . It's another mobile application for iPhones. The coupons on this app are accepted at 15,000 locations nationwide. However, this application costs $29 a month. It would have to have some amazing coupons to make it worth spending that each month.

Expect to see even more of these mobile coupon sites pop up as people rely on technology to help them save some money.
