Being pregnant I try to be more aware of the foods I eat. I've always considered myself a healthy eater. I love fruit and fish but have also had a craving for chocolate. I really don't eat chocolate these days and haven't since before I got pregnant. Although I do admit I still have the occasional glass of chocolate milk. Can't seem to give that up.
However, all this focus on what I'm eating is why I found this study so interesting.
We're all eating more processed and manufactured foods these days. The Center for Science in the Public Interest recently studied some of the additives in our food and came up with a list of those we should avoid. Here’s a look:
In general, it's best to avoid the following ingredients.
- Sodium nitrite
- Saccharin, Aspartame, Acesulfame-K
- Caffeine
- Olestra
- Food Dyes
And don't forget to cut back on sugar and salt, which cause more harm than all the other additives combined.
The CSPI has put together a comprehensive list which details some of the problems with these additives. You can find that here.
