The Austin office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is having its 4th Annual Open House this Saturday, September 15the from 10am to 2pm.
At the Public Safety Open House, you can:
- Tour the 911 Call Center
- Take a 10-minute CPR class
- Escape from the Smoke House
- Test your skill at the Wii gaming station
- Enter raffles for free prizes
- Climb aboard AFD fire trucks and Command Vehicles.
Free parking will be available at Bartholomew Park (5201 Berkman Drive, Austin). Look for the signs. There is no parking at the event. Free shuttles will take you to the City of Austin Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) facility from Bartholomew Park. Old Navy La Frontera, in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, will host a Kids' Safety Fair on Saturday, September 15, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Kids can come out to meet fire fighters and police and to see a fire truck (fire truck arrives at 1 p.m.)

- bike safety
- car seat info
- free balloons
- face painting
Free safety kits will be available from September 13-16 at the Round Rock store located at 2701 Parker Road Suite 500 Building A and any donation will get you 10% off your in-store purchase on that day. Iron Cactus Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar is celebrating sixteen years of serving up Mexican dishes and award-winning margaritas by dropping the price of its famous house margaritas to 16 cents on September 16, 2012, Mexico's Independence Day. The 16-cent price for Iron Cactus' house margaritas is limited to two per guest and will be available at all of its five locations in Austin, Dallas and San Antonio. Come celebrate Diez y Seis all day on Saturday, September 15, 2012 with two free events at Republic Square Park and the Mexican American Cultural Center. The holiday celebrates Mexico's declaration of independence from Spain in 1810. It would take 11 more years for the country to gain its freedom.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled a morning kick-off celebration at Republic Square at 422 Guadalupe Street to commemorate the historic ties of the park to Diez y Seis. This year's celebration will take place during the SFC Farmers' Market Downtown September 15, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The celebration will feature Councilmember Mike Martinez reading El Grito, mariachi and folklorico performances, and more! (Market hours are still 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.).
Emma Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center -- Saturday, September 15, 2012, 6 - 10 p.m.
The entertainment for the Fiesta will begin at 6 p.m. with:
- Charros from the Asociacion de Charros El Herradero y Escaramuza El Rosario
- music by Mariachi Tamazula
- singer Ernesto Cadena Segovia from Saltillo
- the South Texas College Ballet Folklorico
- Mariachi Nueva Generacion from Texas State University
The highlight of the evening will take place at approximately 9 p.m., when the Consul General of Mexico, Rosalba Ojeda, gives “El Grito”, the re-enactment of Father Hidalgo’s call for independence. Parking will not be available at the center. Free parking will be allowed at One Texas Center, located at South 1st and Barton Springs Road. A free shuttle will run every 20 minutes, starting at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 10 p.m., from there to the event and back. Thanks Heidi!
