This is always the time of year when I try to schedule my husband’s eye doctor appointment so we can order his contacts and get new glasses if he needs them. So I thought I’d share the tips Consumer Reports ShopSmart Magazine just put out on the best places to get glasses and contacts.

They looked at overall customer satisfaction and price. You’ll find the stores ranked in order with the median prices.

Glasses

  • Costco $157
  • Kaiser Permanente $166
  • Empire Vision Centers $155
  • For Eyes Optical $167
  • Doctors Vision Center $199
  • Davis Vision $129
  • Sam’s Club $201
  • Shopko Eyecare Center $194
  • Sears Optical $183
  • Walmart Vision Center $182
  • Target Optical $187
  • BJ’s Optical $191
  • LensCrafters $244
  • Pearle Vision $228
  • Eyemasters $205
  • VisionWorks $182
  • America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses $161
  • JCPenney Optical $177

Remember if you are buying glasses to ask about AAA discounts. AAA members get 30 percent off at LensCrafters and Pearle Vision. You can also drop off your old pair of prescription eyeglasses or sunglasses at any LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Sears Optical, Target Optical, Sunglass Hut or Lions Club and they’ll go to a person in a developing country thanks to the Give the Gift of Sight Foundation.

Contacts

  • Costco $25.99 per box
  • Sears Optical $34.99 per box; $29.99 if you buy eight boxes
  • Independent Eye Doctor $30 per box; discount if you order multiple boxes
  • 1-800-CONTACTS $33.99 per box if you buy four boxes; $29.99 if you buy eight
