Austin has a lot to offer people of all ages. We all know that, now Money Magazine is touting it too.
This month the magazine named Austin one of the best places to retire if you really hate paying taxes and one of the best places to get work.
Austin city council is currently considering raising property taxes and we already pay among the highest in the country. However the lack of a state sales tax helps Austin steal the title of the best place in the South Central part of the country.
The magazine says Lewes, Delaware is the best place in the Northeast; Fairhope, Alabama in the Southeast; Sioux Falls, ND in the Midwest and Henderson, NV in the West.
When looking at the best places to get work, the magazine looked at the unemployment rate and the pay. It found Austin is one of the few sizable metro areas with unemployment below 8 percent, that also has mid-career pay for college grads above the $75,000 national average. The latest unemployment rate for our area is 7.6 percent and the average pay is $80,000.
The other areas making the list: Boulder, CO; Washington, D.C.; Salt Lake City, UT; Minneapolis, MN.
