The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that Chrysler is recalling 161,000 2007 and 2008 model Jeep Wranglers because of a fire hazard. The recall affects cars that were manufactured between June 2006 and July 2008.
These cars all have automatic transmissions but were not equipped with a transmission fluid temperature warning system.
According to Chrysler there have been at least three reports of people using their Jeeps off road and the fluid has boiled over. When that happens the fluid may come in contact with a hot engine or exhaust component and cause a fire.
Chrysler will begin sending letters to Jeep owners in December.
Dealers will inspect and install a “hot oil” message in the instrument panel and a chime indicating an elevated transmission fluid condition. If you’ve got questions you can call 1-800-835-1403.
