AUSTIN--Thousands lined up outside the Palmer Events Center in South Austin before the sun came up Saturday morning. Families braved the cold to receive warm coats at no cost through the 25th annual Coats for Kids distribution day.
Thanks to generous volunteers, more than 33,000 new or gently used coats were available free to central Texas children and teenagers this year. There was also a new community health fair.
Nadia Mugica lined up at 6:30 a.m. to find a coat for her son and daughter. She said the wait is worth it.
"We don't have the financial means to buy new jackets every year so we come out here to get some help," Mugica said.
Last year, with the help of our sponsors and 2,600 community volunteers, Coats for Kids distributed 35,157 new and gently used coats to young people in Central Texas.
Along with the Junior League of Austin, Jack Brown Cleaners and Kase 101, KVUE invites all families in need to join us at the Palmer Events Center to choose a new or gently used coat for each child
The distribution runs through 3:00PM.
"There is really nothing like being able to make such a direct impact on a child's life," said Casie Wenmhos with the Junior League of Austin.
