Lunch Ladies: Flavored waters
Courtesy

Plenty of zero-calorie flavored waters now line shelves at convenience stores and super markets, and they make meeting that daily 64-ounce quota much more palatable. But flavored waters don't have to be sweet at all.

Lunch Ladies: Starbucks salads
Courtesy

Starbucks, a Lunch Ladies favorite, has introduced even more healthy lunch offerings. As expected, the java joint didn't disappoint with its to-go containers packed with salads, pasta and other fresh offerings.

Lunch Ladies: Olive Garden
DMN

We checked out the Garden Fare menu at the Olive Garden where they know their way around a plate of pasta. We ordered the classics and of course their famous minestrone soup. This installment of Lunch Ladies is not only tasty, but poignant — it's Gretchen's final one (for now!).

Lunch Ladies: Which Wich sandwiches
Readers have been asking us for years to try Which Wich* sandwiches, and at long last we saw that they added nutritional information to the Web site. The restaurant's unique system has customers place their orders by writing their sandwich choices on a paper bag. Everyone knows what traditional sandwiches are like: roast beef, turkey, ham. So we tried the more unique, but not-too-high-in-calories-or-fat "wiches" on the menu.

Lunch Ladies: Jimmy Dean D-Lights
DMN

Let’s face it. Not only are there days when you eat lunch at your desk, sometimes you eat breakfast ala cubicle. On those days it might be a good idea to have a few breakfast items stashed in the refrigerator like Jimmy Dean D-Lights breakfast sandwiches.

Lunch Ladies: Morningstar Farms
DMN

Sometimes even vegetarians crave "junk food." At least that's what we've gathered from the company that makes vegetarian chicken nuggets, buffalo wings and corn dogs. Overall these items tasted and looked impressively like their meat counterparts, making it easy for the "starter vegetarian" to ease into this kind of diet. You can also try using these products in the inventive recipes that Morningstar lists on their Web site.

Lunch Ladies: Lean Cuisine with double veggies
DMN

Lean Cuisine is the king of the light frozen meal (and Amy's is the queen, of course). Now the illustrious ruler of the Land of Lunch has granted us five new Spa Cuisine Classics entrees that have twice the veggies of an average frozen meal.

05/22/2007

Lunch Ladies: Tabatchnick soups
DMN

We were browsing the frozen foods at Central Market when we found Tabatchnick soups. We picked them up to discover wholesome ingredients and low calories. They have more than three dozen varieties, including six Kosher recipes.

Lunch Ladies: South Beach Diet frozen wraps
DMN

The South Beach Diet is hanging in there, and Kraft continues to introduce new products associated with the diet. Frozen pizzas, cereal, snack bars, salad dressings – the turquoise South Beach logo is all over the grocery store. The frozen wraps are some of the line's newer varieties. Each box has just two wraps, and they take about 2 minutes to cook in the microwave.

04/23/2007

Lunch Ladies: Odwalla

DMN

Odwalla's marketing campaign could say their product is fruit juice on steroids. Of course that may conflict with the company's froufrou names for their drinks, such as AntioxiDance, but would sync with the company's vitamin-infused beverages. In any case, the Lunch Ladies decided to try a handful of Odwalla's many offerings.

04/10/2007

Lunch Ladies: Moosewood Frozen Dinners

DMN
Back to the freezer for the Lunch Ladies. We are very busy these days and don't have time to leave the building to grab takeout. We stocked up on some organic vegetarian meals from Moosewood and discovered they are quite pleasing for a meal in a box.

03/26/2007

Lunch Ladies: On The Border

DMN

On The Border was recently bashed for encouraging "extreme eating." The Center for Science in the Public Interest scorned the restaurant's Double-Stacked Club Quesadillas So we set out to find the lesser of the evils.

Lunch Ladies: Hormel Microwave Trays

CAPTIONHERE

Roast beef and mashed potatoes sitting on the store shelves next to the canned goods? How bizarre. But there they were, Hormel Microwave Trays in a variety of options: chicken and rice, spaghetti with meat sauce, turkey and dressing, and many more.

02/26/2007

Lunch Ladies: Yogurt

DMN

There are so many yogurt choices these days that the Lunch Ladies decided to sample some that were new to us. Names such as Brown Cow, Wallaby and Lucky Layla Farms winked at us from the shelves.

02/12/2007

Lunch Ladies: Milk, hold the cow

Not all milk comes from the same place. While peanut milk never measured up to its butter cousin, the popularity of soy and rice milk has soared. We decided to check out some vanilla-flavored versions that came off the dry goods aisle and the refrigerator shelf – regular, light, unsweetened or infused with extra vitamins.

01/29/2007

Lunch Ladies: The String Bean

Dining out at a home-style restaurant that serves mouth-watering chicken fried steak, pork chops and meat loaf can be a challenge if you're trying to stick to a heart-healthy diet. That's why the Lunch Ladies were super-impressed with The String Bean restaurant's heart-healthy entrees featuring steamed veggies and grilled lean protein.

01/14/2007

Lunch Ladies: Frozen burritos

The charm of the frozen burrito comes in its tightly compact package that's easy to heat, simple to eat and light on the pocket book. These burritos take up little space in the freezer and can make a tasty, quick meal. The Lunch Ladies tried three brands that we found at Whole Foods: Matthew's, P.J.'s Organics and Amy's.

01/01/2007

Lunch Ladies: Thai Kitchen Noodle Cart

We saw a variety of noodle bowls on the store shelf, but most were two or more servings. We know what we'd do: eat the whole thing and feel like a big bowl of bloated noodles afterward. That's why we loved Thai Kitchen Noodle Cart's tasty single-serving kits. The downside was that the preparation was a little tedious with all the straining and mixing, and we feared burning ourselves handling the flimsy trays. Sure they come with a fork, but they should come with hot pads!

Lunch Ladies: Best and Worst of 2006

People often write the Lunch Ladies saying we must have the best job, eating all this great food. But we got to tell you, it ain't easy. Some of the things we try are – to put it nicely – bad. Oh, let's not put it nicely. We tried some gross, nasty, should-be-ashamed-to-call-itself-food food. Luckily there were a lot of winners this year, too. Here's our lists of the best and worst.

12/04/2006

Lunch Ladies: Turkey sandwiches

It's that holiday time of year when the turkey's cuisine status is elevated to the highest of pecking orders. Even though we will probably get more than our fill of the holiday bird at grandmother's house and the requisite soirees, the Lunch Ladies often crave a well-made turkey sandwich. Turkey meat is low in calories, after all, and full of nutrients and taste.

11/20/2006

Lunch Ladies: Fast food, hold the guilt

Burgers, dogs and fries don't usually top our list of light lunch options. But a reader turned us on to Topz – a healthier alternative to traditional fast food.

11/07/2006

Lunch Ladies: Tea

It’s been a long day at work and you’ve barely gotten up from your desk. Take a 10-minute mental break over a cup of hot tea. Ahhhhh, sanity returns. The Lunch Ladies have been there. We know. So we tried some hot tea for you, gravitating toward those with interesting names.

10/10/2006

Lunch Ladies: Firehouse Subs
Firehouse Subs restaurants have moved to Plano, Carrollton and Frisco. The franchise offers up a variety of submarine sandwiches that carry out the firefighter theme with names such as Engine Company, Hook and Ladder and Engineer. The firehouse-inspired decor includes lots of fire-engine red with Dalmation-dog print table tops.

09/26/2006

Lunch Ladies: Ready Pac Bistro To Go Salads
The Lunch Ladies were already quite familiar with Ready Pac’s bags of prewashed, precut salad greens, found in the produce area of the grocery store, but recently we discovered the brand’s Bistro To Go bowl salads.

09/12/2006

Lunch Ladies: Kashi frozen dinners
Kashi bills itself as the seven whole grain company, which would explain why it makes lots of cereal products. Kashi has recently introduced a new line of frozen dinners that we found at Whole Foods.

08/29/2006

Lunch Ladies: New pizzas
Healthy Choice has finally come out with round pizzas, but those are so 20th-century. Lean Cuisine, ever the innovator, has once again trumped Healthy Choice with its new square Brick Oven style pizzas. For pizza lovers like the Lunch Ladies, this is pizza history.

08/15/2006

Lunch Ladies: P.F. Chang's China Bistro
The Lunch Ladies liked Pei Wei so much we decided to give the chain's upscale cousin, P.F. Chang's China Bistro, a try. The P.F. Chang's menu offered some familiar items, such as lettuce wraps, but provided many different dishes as well.

08/01/2006

Lunch Ladies: Lunch box options
For this back-to-school review, the Lunch Ladies stepped aside and let a younger generation (much younger) take over the taste-testing. Eight-year-olds Hayley Leavell and Meredith Banks tried more than 15 products to determine the best lunch box options.

06/20/2006

Lunch Ladies: Amy's Kitchen Pocket Sandwiches
Amy's is a longtime favorite of the Lunch Ladies, as are pocket sandwiches. We like Amy's wholesome ingredients, and these tidy, compact meals are great for breakfast, lunch or a snack on the go and can easily be stocked in the freezer at work without taking up a lot of room.

04/25/2006

Lunch Ladies: Seeds of Change
This week the Ladies sampled Seeds of Change, a line of organic frozen meals we found in the Whole Foods freezer aisle. At first we mocked the name Seeds of Change and even turned it into silly songs as we heated up the meals in the break room. But as soon as we took a bite, we were remorseful. These were fantastically good.

04/07/2006

Lunch Ladies: Panda Express
A reader recommended Panda Express, a national fast-food Chinese restaurant, and while we appreciate the suggestion, we wish we'd never laid eyes nor chopsticks on this food. We tried four of the entrees and most of the available side dishes and found little that we liked.

03/27/2006

Lunch Ladies: Potbelly sandwiches
We were in a sandwich state of mind, so the Lunch Ladies decided to check out Potbelly Sandwich Works, particularly since the restaurant was kind enough to provide some nutritional information for select menu items. We ordered all our sandwiches with no mayo, mustard, oil, peppers or cheese to cut down on calories.

03/14/2006

Lunch Ladies: Lean Cuisine panini
Grilling in the microwave? Not really, but close. Lean Cuisine's latest is a line of frozen panini meals that feature a tray that "grills the bread in your microwave."

02/28/2006

Lunch Ladies: Super Suppers
Recently, the Lunch Ladies tried out Super Suppers, a service that makes cooking dinner super simple.

02/13/2006

Lunch Ladies: Popeyes' Cajun dishes
As a tribute to the approaching Mardi Gras season, the Lunch Ladies sampled the Louisiana Legends menu items at Popeyes. The fast-food chain, born in New Orleans in 1972, is known for its spicy Cajun-style chicken. Now, we realize there is probably better and more authentic Cajun cuisine out there, but Popeyes is the only restaurant we could find that bravely lists nutritional information on its Web site.

12/19/2006

Lunch Ladies: Best and worst of 2005
The Lunch Ladies sampled a lot of great food this year but also took one on the chin a few times – all so that you wouldn't have to eat lunch out of the vending machine. Here's a list of our best and the worst picks for 2005.

12/05/2006

Lunch Ladies: Laura's Lifestyle
"After losing more than 125 pounds, I have found the secret!!!" That's what Laura Cross, the spokesperson for Laura's Lifestyle Carb Conscious Cuisine, says on the back of meals' boxes. Well, the Lunch Ladies thought, "Sign us up!" After all, it's our job to try health-minded products and tell our readers whether they're worth their time, money and taste buds. Well, the answer is no, no and a definitive NO!

11/21/2006

Lunch Ladies: Starbucks holiday drinks
Now that chilly weather has finally penetrated one of Texas' longest summers, we can nurse a hot Starbucks holiday drink in the warm confines of a neighborhood coffeehouse.

10/24/2006

Lunch Ladies: Greenz
The Lunch Ladies enjoy a nice salad for lunch, but then, who doesn't? So we sampled the work of the salad masters at Greenz, located at 15615 Quorum Drive in Addison and 2808 McKinney Ave. in Dallas.

10/10/2006

Lunch Ladies: Ruby Tuesday
Ruby Tuesday does a remarkable thing. The restaurant chain lists the nutritional information for everything on its menu – from the leanest grilled chicken to the fattiest burger.

08/15/2006

Lunch Ladies: Lean Cuisine with Dessert
Lean Cuisine relaunched its Dinnertime Selects line -- entrees that have about 30 percent more food than the average Cafe Classics lunch-sized meals. Sometimes the Lunch Ladies need more than a handful of food for their noon meal, so even though the name says "dinner" in it, we tried 'em.

08/01/2006

Lunch Ladies: Pei Wei
Who doesn't enjoy a little exotic Asian fusion for lunch? Our sentiments exactly, so the Lunch Ladies ordered from a favorite spot: Pei Wei, the fast casual restaurant chain by P.F. Chang's China Bistro.

05/09/2006

Lunch Ladies: Tacos & burritos
Both Lunch Ladies struggle to make healthy food choices, and they both love Mexican food. So they tried to find something to your liking at Taco del Mar and Taco Bueno.

Lunch Ladies: Frozen fruit bars
The recent hot, steamy days bring to mind all things summer – favorite swimming holes, backyard barbecues and cool licks on a stick. That's right, we are reviewing frozen fruit bars.

Lunch Ladies: Light Frappuccinos
It's warming up outside, so it's time to sample some cool summer beverages frosty enough to take the edge off the Texas summer heat. We returned to Starbucks, where the baristas know the way to a caffeine buzz.

Lunch Ladies: South Beach Diet
The Lunch Ladies aren't above following trends. So we didn't turn up our nose when a reader asked us to try the new South Beach Diet meals from Kraft.

Lunch Ladies: Gardenburger meals
After the mild success of the Linda McCartney entrees, the Lunch Ladies went for another round of vegetarian meals. Boy, were we sorry.

Lunch Ladies: Linda McCartney meals
Linda McCartney vegetarian meals looked appealing behind the glass freezer doors at the grocery store, so we decided to give them a try.

Lunch Ladies: Applebee's Weight Watchers menu
Applebee's restaurant launched a special menu in May 2004 that lists calories, fat, fiber and Weight Watchers Points for each of its 10 items.

03/02/2006

Lunch Ladies: Spa Cuisine Classics
The Lunch Ladies recently noticed some newcomers to Lean Cuisine's grocery store shelves. Spa Cuisine Classics are supposed to be more like the frou-frou food you'd get at a spa instead of the usual home-cooking knockoffs.

05/09/2006

Lunch Ladies: Starbucks food
It's early and you're trying to wake up – that's why you're standing in line at Starbucks with all the other workaday folks waiting on a caffeine fix. Then you realize you forgot your lunch, so you decide to grab a scone you can eat hunched over your keyboard later in the day. But then – oh joy – you see that Starbucks offers some real food: a supply of sandwiches and salads wrapped and ready to go.

Lunch Ladies: Super Bowl snacks
The Lunch Ladies are ready for some football – and the gobs of food we'll consume at this weekend's Super Bowl parties. But football fiestas don't necessarily mean pigging out on fatty wings and queso. There are plenty of quick, healthy options.

Lunch Ladies: Starbucks drinks
There's nothing better to get your morning started or to pick you up in the afternoon than a caffeine buzz. So the Lunch Ladies decided to sample the wares at that castle of caffeine, Starbucks, because there's one on every corner.
