Keep your eyes on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. At one point on Friday the Dow reached 15,000 for the first time ever before closing below that level. The market was pushed higher after the April employment report showed the job market picked up more than forecast and the jobless rate unexpectedly declined to a four-year low of 7.5 percent. In Texas the unemployment rate is even better than the national average coming in at 6.4 percent in March.
It's Texas travel and tourism week. So are you taking a trip anytime soon? The Texas Credit Union League says 64 percent of people it surveyed plan to take a summer vacation this year. However, the league says even with a predicted growth in travel, some Texans are still not quite ready to spend much more on their vacation. That's because nearly 45 percent of them have the same travel plans as last year.
Speaking of traveling, you might see enhancements in the near future at Sea Rim State Park and Galveston Island State Park. That's because BP has agreed to finance five restoration projects and spend $18 million to repair the damage from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. The projects include artificial reef projects along parts of the Texas coast as well as other improvements.
