The MetCenter -- the mega-shelter located in southeast Austin for Hurricane Harvey evacuees -- will remain open throughout the weekend and until officials deem it's no longer necessary, a representative with the American Red Cross confirmed to KVUE Friday.

Bristel Minsker with the Red Cross said the shelter is currently housing 130 evacuees.

The shelter located at an industrial park off Metropolis Drive near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport was set up in early September. The Austin City Council voted to lease a 64,000-square-foot space and a 96,000-square-foot space at the building Thursday. The initial terms for the leases will be 30 days with an option to extend on a month-by-month basis.

Minsker said it will definitely stay open through the weekend and until every evacuee has been assisted and has plans to leave.
