Who should be QB1 for the Longhorns?

"Both have really pushed each other to where both are playing at a level I haven't seen either of them play," said Texas head coach Tom Herman.

AUSTIN, Texas — Halfway through August camp, the Longhorns have a quarterback problem. But, it's a good problem to have unlike in recent history.

Texas has four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, but a starter has yet to emerge. The quarterback battle remains between sophomore Sam Ehlinger and junior Shane Buechele.

"We're both doing what we do and competing," said Ehlinger.

Buechele echoed what Ehlinger said and added that both are progressing in a heated battle.

“It’s really important to take steps everyday,” Buechele said.

It's an intense quarterback competition between two experienced talents. Texas head coach, Tom Herman said, "they both have had their really good moments."

Both Buechele and Ehlinger have experienced their off days as well, but more positive moments mainly because they are not learning a new offensive system.

"We don't have to learn new plays, we just know them and add onto them," said Buechele.

This is Buechele's third season as a UT quarterback and Ehlinger's second. The game is slowing down for the sophomore from Westlake High School.

"It's year two, you understand who you are and what you're trying to do offensively," said Ehlinger.

The first thing you may notice about Buechele and Ehlinger are their physical gains. Both have benefited UT strength coach, Yancy McKnight's off-season program. Buechele is now a solid 210 pounds and Ehlinger a svelte 235 pounds.

However, both remain two different type of quarterbacks. Regardless of who is better suited for this offensive system, the competition is at a stalemate.

"Both have really pushed each other to where both are playing at a level I haven't seen either of them play," said Herman.
