What happens to the $115K reward offered for the Austin bomber?

A reward that totaled $115,000 was offered for information that led to the arrest of the Austin bomber. Now that he has died, what happens to that money?

AUSTIN — Before the Austin bomber died, the FBI, ATF and the governor's office all offered reward money. It totaled $115,000.

You may be wondering what happens to that reward money.

Could it be used to help victims, since the bomber is dead?

It turns out that those dollars are from their operational budget, and is not a special fund, the FBI said.

"FBI is not permitted to reallocate funding for reward money offered in an investigation to be diverted to crime victims," an FBI representative told KVUE. "If citizens provided information about an individual who was a co-conspirator with the bomber, it is possible they may qualify for all or part of reward money."

In this case, law enforcement solved this case through their own investigative work. There wasn't a tip that led to an arrest and conviction.

KVUE hasn't heard back from the governor's office.
