TxDOT reported that approximately 25 percent of traffic fatalities on Texas roadways were alcohol-related.
The campaign, “Plan While You Can,” encourages drivers to know how they will get home before they head out to holiday festivities.
They are also incorporating a virtual reality game where participants try to dodge snowballs.
Virtual alcoholic drinks are added throughout play, affecting the avatar's reaction time.
"First of all, they think it's fun," said Chris Bishop, a public information officer with TxDOT. "But they also recognize, 'Wow, I didn’t realize just what happens when you've had a drink or two or three,’ so it drives home a very important point."
The game will be at the Trail of Lights in Austin on Saturday in hopes of adding some educational entertainment on the event's grand opening.
