AUSTIN -- Thousands of bees were rescued from an irrigation valve on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol on Tuesday.

The American Honeybee Protection Agency and Central Texas Bee Rescue rescued between 7,000 and 10,000 bees on the Capitol's northeast side.

Walter Schumacher is with the Central Texas Bee Rescue Group. He believes the bees are part of a larger feral colony somewhere else on the Capitol grounds, because he's been removing honeycombs like this one for the last five years.

Schumacher will now take the bees back to the agency's location in southeast Travis County. He will return to the Capitol Tuesday evening to remove any remaining bees that may have been out of the valve box foraging when he removed the honeycombs.
