A teacher accused of making racially insensitive remarks to a student that eventually lead to a student-led protest will not be returning to the school, according to a letter sent out by Fulmore Middle School to parents.

In the letter, Principal Lisa A. Bush states that the Austin ISD Human Resource Department will continue to meticulously review the situation as they decide on future employment options.

A spokesman for AISD told KVUE Friday that the teacher remains on administrative leave.

According to videos and posts made on social media, the teacher allegedly told the student to "go back to Mexico," which sparked students to stage a walkout protest in November.

The teacher was previously placed on administrative leave before the school announced the decision that the teacher would not be returning to teach.

Dear Fulmore Middle School Community,

Providing a safe social and emotional learning environment for our Fulmore Falcon students continues to be a top priority. With this in mind, I am writing to provide an update on a teacher-to-student communication that led to the student protest at Fulmore on Wednesday, November 15th. Particularly, I’d like to address the employment status of the teacher who made a racially insensitive statement to a student.

A decision has been made regarding the teacher’s employment at Fulmore. Our teacher will not be returning to our school. The Austin ISD Human Resource Department will continue to meticulously review this matter in order to make further employment decisions.

As a campus, we will work diligently to find a strong teacher replacement that promotes our campus and district values. We will work with our staff to ensure a smooth transition once we find our new teacher.

This week we continued our social and emotional learning work through community circles with students and staff. This will include a restorative practice approach with all students.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at 512-414-3437 if you have any questions. As always, we appreciate your support and commitment to our students and staff at Fulmore Middle School.

Lisa A. Bush
