Taylor police have arrested the suspect in the hit-and-run that killed a teen girl and sent another to the hospital.
Missael Padilla Lopez, 21, of Taylor, was arrested on a job site in Austin on Wednesday, Aug. 16. He was charged with Accident Involving Personal Injury or Death, a second-degree felony.
Police said the crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. A pick-up truck, believed to have been driven by Lopez, traveling westbound in the 1000 block of Old Thorndale Road hit the two girls, who were walking in the roadway. Lopez allegedly fled the scene.
One girl, identified as Sharonda Barrett, was pronounced dead at the scene and the other girl was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not expected to be life threatening, police said.
On Aug. 11, Taylor police said they obtained a search warrant and seized a vehicle they believe was involved in the crash. The red 1995 GMC pickup was taken into police custody at a Taylor residence after the warrant was obtained.
