AUSTIN – One person is in custody after a shooting at a bus stop near the Austin Community College Highland campus Friday morning.

According to court documents, Joseph Vallejo, 28, is facing multiple charges in connection to the Nov. 3 shooting. Police said they were called to the 100 block of East Highland Mall Boulevard around 8:30 a.m., and learned from the victim that he was smoking a cigarette behind the bus stop when a woman shouted from across the street if a bus had come by. Vallejo allegedly got up from the bus stop bench and approached the victim "as though he wanted to start a fight," the affidavit stated.

The victim told police he felt the suspect put his fist into his chest, but realized it was a gun when he heard a click. He added he did not realize he had been shot until he saw blood and alleged Vallejo calmly walked away.

Police said Friday that Vallejo was taken into custody after he allegedly tried running from police and tripped near the Capital Metro railroad tracks. After he was taken into custody, police noted in the affidavit that the found approximately 13 grams of methamphetamine in Vallejo's backpack and a .380 caliber pistol in his shorts pocket.

Vallejo has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, evading arrest/detention, unlawful carrying of weapon and possession of a controlled substance. According to online records at the Travis County Jail, Vallejo is being held on combined $77,500 bond.
