A woman was sexually assaulted along the side of Mopac by a man she initially believed to be her ride-hailing driver, Austin police confirmed in a release seeking help to find the suspect.

Officials said on Sunday, March 19 at 1 a.m., a woman requested a ride-hailing service from the Domain so, that she could meet her friends in downtown Austin.

The woman got into a white van that she believed to be from the service. However, after driving off, the woman received a text from the actual ride-hailing driver, who was waiting at the location she pinged.

The victim told police she continued riding with the suspect, who pulled over somewhere along the side of Mopac. The suspect then proceeded to sexually assault the victim in the back of the van.

Police did not specify the condition of the victim or how she was able to escape her attacker.

The suspect in the incident is described as a black man, between 30-40 years old, approximately 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, with an athletic build, bald head and brown eyes.

The suspect vehicle is described as a white older model van with a well-maintained interior.
