A McCallum High School student was arrested for allegedly bringing a handgun to school on Wednesday, according to a letter sent to parents by the school's principal.
In an affidavit, police identified the accused as Kevon Walton, 17.
Just before 1 p.m., a student told school officials that they witnessed Walton holding a gun during class. About 5 minutes later, school officers found Walton outside of the McCallum field house. When officers patted him down, they found a small black 2.5 caliber pistol in a brown leather holster tucked into his waistband, according to the affidavit.
The gun was not loaded and the student did not threaten anyone, the letter said.
The student was charged with possession of a firearm in a place where weapons are prohibited. His bond is set at $10,000.
