In a new phone scam reported in Hays County, people accused of impersonating Hays County Sheriff's Office employees have taken thousands of dollars from victims -- many senior citizens -- by threatening them with arrest.
Hays County officials said the phone call comes from a 512 area code. The scammers then proceed to tell the victim that there are warrants for his or arrest, and the only way to avoid being taken into custody is to purchase a prepaid Visa or MasterCard credit card. Victims are then instructed to give the scammers their card numbers. Officials said some of the victims were specifically told to purchase their cards at CVS, Walgreens, Dollar General and other similar stores.
According to the sheriff's office, they will never demand payment from a person in order to avoid being arrested. People concerned if they have active warrants should contact the Hays County Sheriff's Office Warrants Division at 512-393-7810 or 512-393-7827.
