Mother of Austinite killed in Greece speaks out ahead of trial for 9 accused attackers

The trial involving the death of Austinite Bakari Henderson begins Friday in Greece.

AUSTIN — It was a case that shocked the world: a young man from Austin attacked while on vacation in Greece, and it was all caught on video.

On Friday, nine alleged attackers go on trial in that country.

KVUE and the Austin American-Statesman's Tony Plohetski talked to the family of Bakari Henderson about what they're hoping happens next.

Bakari Henderson went to the Greek island of Zakynthos last summer to launch his own fashion line. The 22-year-old Hyde Park Baptist High School graduate had just completed his studies at the University of Arizona.

Officials said he got into an altercation at a bar and that a group of men ran him down. Bakari was seen trying to run away, then being slammed into a car by the attackers.

Phil and Jill Henderson last fall talked about the importance of getting justice in their son's death. Now, his mother says her goal is a conviction.

Plohetski interviewed Jill Henderson, who is in Greece with several of Barkari's family members and friends for the trial.

"We have been waiting 14 months for the trial and so we have been in a holding pattern, so to have the trial be here, it is a great thing, but we want to make sure they are actually convicted and sentenced to prison," she said. "That is my whole goal."

The alleged attackers face up to life in prison.

Two of the nine accused were released from jail soon after Bakari's death and went home to Serbia. They did not return for the trial but could still be convicted.

Bakari Henderson always loved to travel. In the months since his death, his family set up a foundation to help provide travel opportunities to people who lost a loved one to tragedy.
