Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered all Texas flags in San Marcos and surrounding cities to half-staff in honor of Officer Kenneth Copeland, who was killed during an ambush-style shooting on Monday while he was serving a warrant.
"As the San Marcos community and Police Department continue to mourn the tragic death of officer Kenneth Copeland, I’ve ordered Texas flags to be lowered in remembrance of his courage and bravery," said Abbott. "I ask that all Texans continue to join Cecilia and I in prayer for officer Copeland's family during this difficult time."
San Marcos Police Chief Chase Stapp said Officer Copeland was the first officer in San Marcos history to be killed in the line of duty. Officials said that though he was wearing a protective vest, Copeland later succumbed to his wounds at Central Texas Medical Center.
Reports state the shooting suspect also suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to an Austin hospital. He will be placed back into police custody when he is medically stable.
