A young boy who was struck by a vehicle in South Austin Feb. 28 has died, according to a letter sent to KIPP Austin Beacon Prep parents.

Daniel Tovar, an eighth grade student at the school, was struck near Slaughter Lane, just east of Interstate 35, just after 6:30 a.m. that day while he was crossing the street. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

According to police, the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with police. The school told KVUE they learned that Tovar had died on the morning of March 7.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Tovar's family. Donate here.

Here is the full letter that was sent to KIPP families:

Dear Team and Family,

It is with great sadness that I am informing you of the death of a KIPP Austin Beacon Prep 8th grade student, Daniel Franco Tovar. Daniel passed away this morning from injuries suffered after being hit by a car on Wednesday, Feb. 28 as he was on his way to school. Our thoughts go out to Daniel’s family and loved ones

Daniel has been a beloved part of the KIPP Austin Team and Family for four years, since he started as a Beacon Blazer 5th grader. School staff and students remember him as a fun-loving member of the KIPP Austin Beacon Prep community who loved to play soccer, read, and valued friendship and his friends. Daniel’s resiliency, playful nature and presence will be missed by all that knew him.

Professional counselors will be available for students and staff at our South Campus throughout the day Thursday and Friday to provide support to all who request it. If you or your child would like to meet with a social worker either day, please come to South Campus or call your front office to let them know.

We know that many in our Team and Family will want to offer your support in this difficult time, so we have started a GoFundMe campaign to help offer financial support to Daniel’s family. You can voluntarily donate here and all donations will go directly to the Tovar family. We will pass along other opportunities to support as the family informs us of their needs.

We will communicate memorial details once we have them. Please check the KIPP Austin Beacon Prep Facebook page for the update (www.facebook.com/kippaustinbeaconprep).

Thank you for your support during this difficult time.
