The "badly decomposed" bodies of a man and a woman were found near Leander Saturday at the scene of a crash that investigators believe happened several weeks ago.
Monday afternoon police identified the deceased as Warren Thomson, 76, of Georgetown and Johanna Sturm, 73, of Corpus Christi.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the bodies were discovered in a 2014 Nissan Altima about three miles northeast of Leander at around 11:30 a.m. Saturday after someone called about a car crash involving two people. When officials got to the scene, they found the burnt car and bodies.
Investigators believe that the pair were driving along Ranch to Market Road 2243 near Escalera Parkway when the vehicle went off the roadway and crashed into a wooded area, striking several trees. Investigators said neither victim was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Department of Public Safety said they believe the crash happened several weeks ago because of the decomposition of the bodies. They also added the area where they crashed also made it difficult for authorities to discover the crash.
DPS said they're continuing to investigate, but they do not believe foul play factored into the accident.
