People living around the Decker Power Plant may see a gas flare this week beginning Tuesday as part of a maintenance procedure.

Austin Energy said the company that supplies natural gas to the plant on Decker Lane will flare gas as part of routine maintenance for 9-10 hours on Nov. 1, and on Nov. 2 if needed. When work is completed, the public could see flaring for 3-4 hours between Nov. 5 and Nov. 8.

The utility said the flare will be visible for several miles, and that flaring is required to remove natural gas from the pipeline to perform the maintenance. Austin Energy does not own the pipeline, and added a similar flaring occurred earlier in 2016.
