AUSTIN – A cyclist is in the hospital after a crash early Thursday morning in downtown Austin, and police say they have arrested the driver of one of the vehicles involved.
Austin police said the crash happened near North Lamar and Sixth Street shortly before 1 a.m. June 15.
According to an arrest affidavit, Katie Bykowski, 24, was driving her SUV westbound on Sixth Street at a high rate of speed when she ran a red light and crashed into a van. The van then spun out of control and struck the cyclist.
The cyclist was sitting on her bike waiting for the light to turn green so she could continue southbound on Lamar.
The cyclist was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was treated for multiple fractures throughout her body, a lacerated liver and a traumatic brain injury, according to the affidavit.
The responding officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Bykowski's breath and noted that she appeared intoxicated. She told the officer she had drank three vodka drinks at a bar.
Bykowski was charged with intoxication assault, a third-degree felony.
