The Austin City Council approved three items during its Thursday meeting to help with the city’s housing crunch and provide more options for those already living in the city.

According to KVUE’s partners at the Austin American-Statesman, the ‘Strategic Housing Blueprint’ passed on Thursday offers more than 50 suggestions to help deal with Austin’s housing crunch. Among them are calls to revamp the city’s permitting process and purchasing unused land to preserve it for affordable housing projects. The blueprint also calls for the construction of another 135,000 housing in the units by 2025. Austin and Travis County are expected to add around 500,000 people by 2050.

The council also approved the controversial Austin Oaks development on Thursday. The Statesman reported the small office park at MoPac and Spicewood Springs Road will be replaced with “new office towers, retail and up to 375 new units – including 41 for lower income residents.”

Austin city council members also voted to spend up to $600,000 to relocate residents in a rundown East Austin apartment complex. A report found the landlord hadn’t been making much-needed repairs to the apartments at 1127 and 1205 East 52nd Street. The landlord is refuting those claims, and is fighting those in court Friday.

If nothing changes, tenants will be moved and their rent subsidized to match what they are currently paying.
