The Coast Guard is currently searching for a missing boater in the Gulf Coast who, according to KVUE's news partners at the Austin American-Statesman, is from Austin.

The Coast Guard told KVUE they've been searching for Kevin Ferrel after a good Samaritan reported him missing Saturday afternoon. The good Samaritan called authorities shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday to report that a small pleasure craft was found idling with a fishing pole and cell phone in it, but no one aboard, approximately a half mile south of Newcomb Point in Copano Bay.

The phone was identified as Ferrel's. Authorities called his wife, who said that he left at 12:30 p.m. to fish around the Newcomb's Point area.

Rescue crews searched for Ferrel throughout the day Sunday and have resumed the search Monday. The Coast Guard said he is still missing as of 4 p.m.

The Statesman spoke with Ferrel's family Monday. They said they don't know what happened, but that he was an experienced fisher.
