Bridge construction closes portion of I-35 in Round Rock

The closure starts at 8 p.m. Friday and continues until 8 a.m. Saturday.

TxDOT is planning to shut down I-35 at Old Settlers Boulevard in Round Rock Friday night and Saturday night.

The closure starts at 8 p.m. Friday and continues until 8 a.m. Saturday.

All northbound main lanes of I-35 between 1431 and Hesters Crossing will close Friday night.

Southbound main lanes will be reduced to one lane. Only one southbound frontage road lane will be open, and only one northbound frontage road lane will be open.

Saturday night, all southbound main lanes will close 8 p.m.-8 a.m., and only one northbound main lane will be open.

"We know that we've got a lot going on,” said Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Diann Hodges. “It's spring break, SXSW. Normally, we would not do a bridge demolition or a beam set or anything that would shut down I-35 during this time. But we're really at a critical part of this bridge construction."

Crews are setting beams for a new bridge with U-turn lanes and a shared use path. It'll replace the old, smaller bridge.

TxDOT said because of rain, the project was delayed by a couple weeks.

“We've had so much traffic in that area for so long, we just can't delay this project for any longer,” said Hodges.

Old Settlers Boulevard will also be closed Friday and Saturday night over I-35. You can use US 79 or 1431 as detours.

Bridge construction is supposed to finish in a couple months. The Old Settlers Boulevard project at I-35 as a whole is slated to finish in the fall.

TxDOT said the next major closure will a U-turn bridge at Old Settlers Blvd. in a couple weeks.

The project costs $12.4 million.
