The Hay's County Sheriff's Office issued a rabies alert Thursday after a live bat tested positive for the disease.

HCSO said the bat was found alive around 3:25 p.m. on Sept. 25 near the front entrance of Dripping Springs Elementary School.

The Department of State Health Services conducted a rabies test on the bat and determined that it carried the disease.

Anyone who thinks they may have come into contact with the bat should contact the HCSO Animal Control Unit at 512-393-7896 or the Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control at 254-778-6744.
