The Backpacks for Hope campaign kicked off Thursday.
The month-long event collects school supplies and backpacks for at-risk children.
This is the 7th year the Texas Advocacy Project spearheaded the drive. The group says it costs nearly $200 for every student to get school-ready, and the program is meant to ease the financial setback for families.
However, it's what's inside the backpacks that staff said is the most valuable: free legal and safety planning information to those in domestic violence shelters across the state.
“They need that protective order, they need that divorce, they need that custody of the child,” Texas Advocacy Project Executive Director Heather Bellino said. “All of these things work together to provide a safety of hope and a good, great future for these families.”
Last summer, the group gave away more than 600 backpacks, this year their goal is 2,000. The last day to donate is July 29.
