An Austin police sergeant has died Friday after he suffered severe burns in an off-duty incident, the department has confirmed to KVUE.
Austin Police Department Sgt. Gary Christenberry was injured a "little over a week ago," Assistant police Chief Frank Dixon tweeted Thursday. APD could not confirm to KVUE what exactly happened during the incident that sent him to the hospital, but a GoFundMe apparently set up by his daughter said that he sustained severe burns over 29 percent of his body after an accident at his home.
"It is with a heavy heart that we now mourn the passing of Sgt. Gary Christenberry, after his valiant battle," Dixon tweeted. "Please pray for his family."
Christenberry was commissioned in 1993.
